Alabama Crimson and Ohio State Among Favorites

Since 2008, Saban's Alabama teams have spent all or part of each season ranked No. 1 in national polls. They start this season there again. Oddsmakers have the Crimson Tide and Ohio State Buckeyes as the two favorites to claim the college football championship on Jan. 8, 2018 in Atlanta.

For now, though, let’s take a look at which teams may win their conferences, and other college football prop bets (odds provided by bovada.lv).

The Florida State Seminoles have finished in the top 10 five times and won 10 or more games six times in seven seasons under Jimbo Fisher. But what a tough schedule. They open the season against Alabama and finish it on the road against Clemson and Florida. The Tigers won their first national title last season since 1981. They lose star quarterback Deshaun Watson, but Clemson still has a talented roster, especially on defense.

The Sooners have their biggest test of the season in Week 2 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to battle Ohio State. Another tough task with be adjusting to a new head coach after 18-year veteran Bob Stoops stepped down in June. Heisman Trophy contender Baker Mayfield and the Sooners are gunning for their third straight conference title. A Nov. 4 showdown with Oklahoma State may decide it. The Cowboys have won 10 games in each of the last two seasons.

The USC Trojans are the odds-on favorite to win the Pac 10 following a shootout victory in the Rose Bowl. But their objective will be much higher than just another bowl win, especially with Heisman candidate Sam Darnold leading the way. The QB passed for more than 3,000 yards last season, with 31 TDs and just nine interceptions. The Washington Huskies are the defending champions in the conference. However, they lost a number of starters in the NFL draft.

The toughest game on the schedule for Ohio State is definitely their last regular season matchup when they travel to the Big House in Ann Arbor to play Michigan. Head coach Urban Meyer, entering his sixth season, has lost just six of 67 games with the Buckeyes. The general consensus is this could be Meyer’s best recruiting class ever. The Wolverines, on the other hand, must replace a huge senior class after back-to-back 10-win seasons.

Alabama will look to extend its streak of conference titles to four this season. The Crimson Tide also want the national crown back after losing a heartbreaker to Clemson in the championship final. Nick Saban’s team starts the year off with a big test at home to Florida State and ends the season on the road against Auburn. Jalen Hurts had an impressive rookie season with the Tide. He must up his passing game if Alabama wants to end the year No. 1. If he fails, the Tigers can steal this title.

The Tide lost some of their stars to the NFL in this year’s draft, including four first-rounds selections. But many of their five-star recruits will help fill those holes. Coach Saban’s record is impeccable. He’s 101-18 in nine seasons in Tuscaloosa with four national championships. The team was perfect in the regular season last year. Playoffs? Roll Tide.

Quarterback Sam Darnold can take a team to the next level. He proved that last year when he led the Trojans to nine straight victories to close out the season, including a 52-49 thriller over Penn State in the Rose Bowl. In less than a year, Darnold went from a backup to the Heisman favorite. USC has some question marks, like every other college team. Now, they also have the best quarterback in the land.
