He has sharp speed in a race with less early speed than usual for a turf sprint, though he will be facing tougher company and he may be better at five and a half furlongs than five.
The best bet for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint this year is the local contender #4 Lieutenant Dan. He has tactical speed, and should be able to lay right off of Golden Pal. He is a true five-furlong, firm-turf horse currently in the best form of his career, and he will be very fit turning back from a win down the hill at Santa Anita.
#10 Gear Jockey started his career going longer but has been successfully reinvented as a turf sprinter this year. He has never gone this short, but is versatile enough to make a good trip for himself and he should take well to the truly firm turf he will find in California. Though he comes into the race off a freshening, he does run well after a little time off.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint International Contenders
#1 Glass Slippers, the first overseas shipper to win this race when she triumphed last year, goes for the repeat. Though the cutback to five furlongs is still in her wheelhouse, she is buried on the fence and she will not get as much speed to close into late as she got in this race last year.
The more interesting overseas option is #2 Emaraaty Ana. He won the six-furlong Sprint Cup (G1) at Haydock last out, but has successfully dialed back to five furlongs before. He should sit much closer to the pace than his stablemate, something that gives him a far better chance over this ultra-short distance on California-firm turf.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Longshots
#12 Extravagant Kid has to improve from his second in the Woodford, but he can. He had a troubled trip that day, and it was his first start after an international foray. His third-place finish in the King’s Stand (G1) this year suggests he likes five furlongs well enough for this, and he can carve out a clean and tactical trip from the outside.
For deeper exotic tickets like superfectas, consider #11 Fast Boat as well. He can successfully cut back to this short a trip. Though he is a late-running type, he is consistent enough to get into the picture late even if there isn’t a whole lot of pace, meaning he has a good chance to invade exotics at a long price in this spot.
