Keeneland Turf Mile Contenders
With a field of thirteen, the Keeneland Turf Mile is well set for a long shot to make a huge impact. And, #11 Diamond Oops has strong claims to be that longshot. Though he is stretching out from six furlongs, he has been excellent at a range of distances and ran a close second when running in this race two years ago.
Diamond Oops has the tactical speed to handle his relatively outside post and to be able to work out a trip in a big field. He also reunites with Florent Geroux, a jockey who not only knows him well but also often shows up strong in big races. At a big price, this consistent gelding should make a strong showing.
#7 Pixelate is in the right form to take this step forward in class. He romped over several of these foes, including Somelikeithotbrown, Monarchs Glen, and Argentello in the Mint Million (G3) at Kentucky Downs last out. Though most of his other recent races have covered longer trips, the cut back to a mile last outdid him well, and he has never finished out of the money at this trip. #10 Order of Australia returns to Keeneland for the first time since upsetting the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at 73/1 odds last November. Though he has only won once since he has been keeping quality company and has hit the board in Group 1 miles in France in his last two. He has tactical speed from a relatively outside gate, and he ought to appreciate the return to the better ground than he handled last out at Longchamp.
#4 Space Traveller makes his third start since relocating to North America and moving to the barn of Brendan Walsh. Though he has not won since a handicap victory at York in June, both of his American outings have been at the Grade 1 level, and he has shown classy form at the mile throughout his career. It also jumps out that European jockey Daniel Tudhope jumps on the plane to ride this horse — and only this horse.
Trainer Paulo Lobo has a pair in this race. #6 Ivar is the returning champion, but he has been on layoff most of the year.
The more interesting — and far longer priced — of his pair is #3 In Love. He gets a class test in this, as he has not yet proven himself at the graded level yet. But, he has won his last two races, including a tough restricted stakes at Kentucky Downs last time out. He has turned a corner with rider Alex Achard, he is tactically versatile, and he intrigues for exotic wagers.
