El Camino Real Derby winners have had an excellent history in the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Tank’s Prospect (1985), California-bred superstar Snow Chief (1986), and Tabasco Cat (1994) all parlayed an El Camino Real Derby win into Preakness glory, and Tabasco Cat won the Belmont Stakes as well.
Who will have a chance to follow in those steps? Keep reading to find out. Remember that you can find more horse racing betting resources here.

El Camino Real Derby Favorites
#2 Mackinnon is the likely favorite in the El Camino Real. He has three wins in Southern California, all over turf, and ran a strong third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) after some early trouble. Though he has yet to try Tapeta, turf form often transfers nicely. And, he has the tactical speed to work a good trip.
The most interesting betting horse in the race is #6 Boise. He is twice a winner in four starts, including a late-running score two back in the Gold Rush Stakes at a mile over the Golden Gate Tapeta. Though he was disappointed last out at Santa Anita, his three-back race on the Breeders’ Cup undercard at Del Mar was an excellent effort, and a run back to that effort can win this.
#4 Blackadder will take some money because he is trained by Bob Baffert, but he will be an underlay. He has never run on anything but dirt, and he has never faced winners. His maiden win also came in an off-turf race, against horses who were not originally scheduled for that footing. So, this is a big step up and there are other horses far more interesting to wager on.
Pegasus Price Horses
In addition to Boise and Mackinnon, there are some long shots that are good possibilities for exotics.
#11 Del Mo is Mackinnon’s longer-priced stablemate in the Doug O’Neill barn. Del Mo is facing winners for the first time, but he is nicely accustomed to going two turns on the Golden Gate Tapeta and his pedigree suggests he will love the extra furlong. He should have no problem dropping in from the outside, wherever there is space, and making a late run.
#1 Stormy Samurai drew the fence but has won from a rail draw before. He has another nice pedigree for stretching out to this nine-furlong trip. And, he is well proven at Golden Gate, with two wins over the Tapeta including one against a first-level allowance company. It would be no surprise if he takes another step forward.
For deeper exotics tickets, don’t count out #10 Il Bellator, one of the longest shots on the board. Though he has not raced since November, his barn does well with layoff horses, as well as with last-out maiden winners. It is always a good sign when a horse wakes up in their first two-turn try, and he has the tactical speed to work a nice outside stalking trip.
