Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks 2017

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks 2017

Juvenile Fillies Entries and Odds

Looking over the past results of the Juvenile Fillies, it has been something of a boom-or-bust race from a betting pioint of view. While the favorite has won just over half of the 32 versions of the race, at the same time it has produced some huge wins, with three of the past four winners going off at odds of 32-1 or higher.

It's hard to find fault with a perfect record, and that's what we have with Moonshine Memories for trainer Simon Callaghan. She broke her maiden at first asking in mid-August at Del Mar, and then came back just over two weeks later to capture the (G1) Del Mar Debutante Stakes. She followed that up with a win at Santa Anita in the (G1) Chandelier at 1 1/6 miles, thus giving her wins on both the track and at the distance.

At the same time, a  look at the running lines for her races gives room for pause. Although she has shown very good early speed, both of her last two wins have been very slow in the second half, and there are others in this field that may be able to take advantage of that fact.

Trainer Casses Brings a Trio of Contenders

One of those might be Gio Game, one of three in the race for trainer Mark Casse. She ran second in both of her first two career starts, overcoming poor starts and trip trouble in both. The second of those was on the turf at Saratoga. Last out she went back to the dirt and earned her maiden score by crushing the field by more than nine lengths going 1 1/16 miles in a time that was 1.5 seconds faster than Moonshine Memories won at the same distance on a faster track. At possible double-digit odds, she's a live long shot.

The more highly-regarded Casse starter is Heavenly Love, who won her first graded-stakes try last out in the (G1) Darley Alcibiades at Keeneland by 5 1/2 lengths, finishing ahead of Princess Warrior who is also in this field and was the favorite on that day. Prior to that she came from way back to win by five lengths on the turf to get her maiden score. She's a quality filly, but like Moonshine Memories there may be some question about her overall speed.

Expected to be going right to the front is Alluring Star for trainer Bob Baffert. She won her first lifetime start at Del Mar in solid fashion, going wire-to-wire after holding off a challenger in the stretch and pulling away in a 6 1/2 furlong event. She then went up against Moonshine Memories in the Chandelier and led that one to the top of the stretch before giving away and settling for the runner-up spot.

An interesting choice in the exotic bets could be Ontario-bred Wonder Gadot, the third of trainer Casse's charges. She ran the fastest 1 1/16 miles in the field when she won the (G3) Mazerine Stakes at Woodbine by six lengths. Prior to that she was third in a Grade 1 turf stakes, after breaking her maiden on the turf in her first lifetime start. The question for her is the surface, in that the Mazerine was run on the all-weather track at Woodbine, and the Juvenile Fillies will be her first try on dirt. If she handles it, she's in with a good chance.

The Juvenile Fillies goes Saturday, November 4 from Del Mar race track in Del Mar, California. It's Breeders' Cup race #1 on the day, with an expected post time of 3:00 PM Eastern.
