Carolina vs Detroit: NFL Week 2 Panthers Battle Lions

National Football League Week 2 action continues when Carolina hosts Detroit as part of the early NFL schedule on Sunday. Both squads are coming off of a Week 1 win though the Lions looked much more impressive in their victory than the Panthers did. Lions roar in NFL Week 1 stomping of the Giants

As was evident by the Steelers poor showing on Thursday Night Football - Week 1 of the 2014 NFL season was a very small sample size of what teams are all about early in the year. That said, one has to be impressed by Detroit as they dismantled a weak New York Giants squad 35-14 during the Monday Night Football prime time contest. The Lions offence was humming all night as QB Matthew Stafford made plays with his arm and his feet. Stafford passed for 346 yards and two touchdowns (both to Calvin Johnson) and put a dagger in the Giants heart with a gutsy five yard rushing TD late in the third quarter. The Cats defence recorded two sacks and two interceptions as they made QB Eli Manning and G-Men look like a Varsity squad. We like WR Golden Tate as a new compliment to Megatron.

Panthers welcome QB Cam Newton back under center in this contest

Carolina decided to roll the dice and sit QB Cam Newton (rib injury) during their season opening visit to Tampa Bay. The gamble paid off as journeyman QB Derek Anderson had a two TD zero INT day and the Panthers hung on to register a 20-14 win over the Buccuneers. Newton is slated to be under center for this contest and his mobility will be a stern test for the Lions defence. Detroit will face a much better defence in this contest as Carolina picked up where they left off last year (2nd ranked 2013 overall defence) by holding the Bucs to just 254 total yards - 54 of those came during one rushing play.

2014 NFL Week 2 Prediction: Since the Carolina offence isn't much to write home about - the Panthers stud defense vs the Lions stud offence are your choices in this contest.
