If you bet on horses, then Saturday, April 13 presents a wagering opportunity like no other: the Grand National (G3) at Aintree! The four-mile-and-two-furlong race with 30 jumps along the way offers a £1 million purse, making it the richest jumps race of the year in Europe.
It also draws a massive field: even though they have made the field a bit smaller this year for safety reasons, 34 horses are still allowed to run. With fields on a normal day topping out at a dozen or so, you can see why this is a betting opportunity like no other.
The Grand National is a tradition that dates back to 1839, when Lottery won the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, the race we now know as the Grand National. Some of the most beloved horses in racing history have won the Grand National, like three-time winner Red Rum (1973, 1974, 1977) and more recent fan favorite Tiger Roll (2018, 2019).
The last two winners of the Grand National, Corach Rambler and Noble Yeats, will attempt to join the ranks of two time winners in 2024. Off a third-place tilt in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Corach Rambler is a hot favorite in most sportsbooks. Other horses hot in the markets include I Am Maximus, Meetingofthewaters, Vanillier, and Scottish Grand National winner Kitty’s Light.

Grand National Favorites
Corach Rambler is a defined favorite in the market and there are good reasons why. He won this race last year, and even though winners rarely repeat, Corach Rambler comes into the race off an excellent third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The rainy weather only helps him along, and he has the stamina to outlast his foes over this marathon distance.
Meetingofthewaters needs to settle a bit better early than he did in his last race at Cheltenham, where he nonetheless finished a credible third. However, if he does? The sky's the limit for this seven-year-old Willie Mullins trainee. He has been well fancied in the markets in the days leading up to the race, he is better weighted than stablemate I Am Maximus, and he may be able to break Willie Mullins’ 19-year winless streak in the National.
Grand National Mid-Priced Contenders
Mahler Mission is rounding into form at the right time. Though he has not won since last January, he finished second in three of his four starts since then, including a good second in a three mile, two furlong race at Newbury in December. He handles soft and heavy ground well, and though he did fall late in a three mile, six furlong race last year, he has had further time to mature and should be fit and ready for this.
Panda Boy is on the upswing coming into the Grand National. He has strong form over rain-affected going, and finished a credible enough fifth when stretched out to three miles, five furlongs for a race at Fairyhouse last year. He has been in the frame in handicap chase company in his last two starts heading into this race, and he got in very well on the weights.
Grand National Long Shot
She was well beaten at Exeter in her final prep for the National, but if Galia Des Liteaux can run back to her Warwick form two starts back she has an excellent shot for a placing. In that two-back race she was a close second over soft ground going three miles five furlongs. She is a big enough price to bet that the last-out disappointment was a bounce, and the real Galia Des Liteaux looks a real exotics chance.
