Deontay Wilder vs Joseph Parker preview

Wilder’s main strength is his phenomenal punching power, because when you look at the fundamentals of boxing "The Bronze Bomber" is lacking.

Wilder has only completed one round since October when he stopped Robert Helenius in his first fight back since his consecutive defeats to Fury. Going in against a quality opponent such as Parker, who has fought regularly and successfully this year, could be something of a risk.

However, Wilder will have the confidence of a man who has swept all but Fury before him. He will be well trained and well prepared and will back his quality and his punching power to overcome any potential rustiness. He needs to set the punches up though because Parker is very good defensively, and will look to stay away from the punch by using range and combinations.

Parker will need to fight well tactically, keeping the American at range. Should he fail to do this, then he is in danger of succumbing to the “Bronze Bomber’s” legendary right hand. Should Parker do this well, the competitive rounds he has clocked up this year may mean he is better prepared to go deeper into the fight than Wilder. Parker has got power himself, but is more known for his jab and his toughness.

If he can jab for the early part of the fight and avoid the cannon that Wilder has, then this will be a very competitive fight heading into the latter rounds.

Boxing picks: Wilder back with a bang @ -550

When it comes to straight up boxing, then Parker is definitely the better of the two. But when you have the power of Wilder that means you only need to land flush once in 36 minutes, it's hard to see how Wilder doesn't get the win.

The early rounds where Wilder is at his explosive best will be the real task for Parker, and having fought three times already this year he will be sharp and aware of the threat. But as has been famously said in the past, Wilder only has to be perfect once to turn the lights out.

Expect a competitive fight that heads into the second half of the fight, before Wilder lands his big right hand and claims yet another knockout win to set up a potential mega-fight with Anthony Joshua in 2024.
