Premier League Week 3 Best Picks
Liverpool Host Arsenal
Liverpool host Arsenal in what is the pick of the weekend’s EPL matches in a fixture that is renowned for seeing the ball being in the back of the net with alarming regularity. The previous six meetings between these two Goliaths has produced 26 goals for an average of 4.33 per game, which makes the -170 Bovada is offering on there being more than 2.5 goals an absolute steal.
Neither team are strong defensively but have plenty of attacking threats. Liverpool will give late fitness tests to defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and midfielder Emre Can, while Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne are all confirmed to be missing the game against the Gunners.
Arsenal haven’t had the best of starts to the current campaign having won 4-3 at home to Leicester and lost 1-0 on the road to Stoke City. Manager Arsene Wenger can select central defender Laurent Koscielny after the Frenchman completed a three-game ban and want-away forward Alexis Sanchez could feature after recovering from an abdominal strain; I quite like the look of the +200 on Sanchez scoring at anytime and would not put off anyone from wanting to bet on that outcome.
Liverpool at +110 favorites to win the game within the scheduled 90-minutes and I think that is a fair price even though the Red are without a number of key players mentioned above. You also have to take into consideration that Liverpool were in European action midweek when they beat Hoffenheim 4-2 to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, although they did that at a canter. I’ll probably stick with the over 2.5 goals market, but may also put a couple of bucks on the draw at +255.
Can Harry Kane Get Off The Mark This Weekend?
If you are looking for another player to back in the goal scoring markets then look no further than Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane. The England striker is without a goal in his team’s opening two game but that is nothing new because Kane traditionally starts the season slowly.
Kane had the most shots of any player last week and the most on target, with only some top goalkeeping preventing him from opening his account for the season. This weekend, Kane and his Spurs team mates play host to Burnley at Wembley Stadium in a game that Tottenham are overwhelming -475 favorites to win; Burnley are +1300 outsiders.
Burnley have conceded in both of their league games this season, shipping two goals in against a nine-men Chelsea team on the opening day and then leaking one goal to West Bromwich so I don’t hold much hope on the Lancashire-based outfit keeping a clean sheet when they visit Tottenham.
Bovada will give you odds of +200 on Kane opening the scoring and -200 on him finding the back of the net before the final whistle blows. Either bet is solid, as is Tottenham Hotspur to record a shutout win at -130.
Everton Could Cause An Upset At Stamford Bridge
Another fascinating fixture sees reigning champions Chelsea play host to Everton at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea were rock solid in defense last season yet this campaign they are anything but that. The Blues have conceded in each of their two league games, including three at home to Burnley, and in the Community Shield that they drew 1-1 with Arsenal.
Antonio Conte will be without captain Gary Cahill who serves the second game of his two-match ban and Eden Hazard is still in the treatment room. Cesc Fabregas, however, is available again after suspension against a team that hasn’t won at Chelsea for 23 years in one of soccer’s unwanted records. The Toffees have more than half a dozen players unavailable including injured Ross Barkey and the suspended Morgan Schneiderlin.
Ronald Koeman will give fitness tests to Sandro Ramirez and Idrissa Gueye, the latter being vitally important in the centre of Everton’s midfield. Record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson could be handed his first league start in an Everton shirt after scoring a tremendous 55-yard goal midweek.
Chelsea are -245 favorites to beat Everton and I don’t see too much value there even though Chelsea won the corresponding fixture last season by five goals to nil. Everton are available at a long +700 and that is worth a couple of dollars of anyone’s money, as is the draw at +340 because Everton are a completely different team to the won the Blues brushed aside 10-months ago.
