Pegasus World Cup Favorite
National Treasure will be a heavy favorite, though there are reasons to be skeptical. It is true trainer Bob Baffert has won the Pegasus twice, and National Treasure’s early speed should play well at Gulfstream. However, he has not been a consistent horse and does not tend to come with his best first off the layoff. With that, he is an unappealing bet at such short odds.
Pegasus World Cup Top Contenders
First Mission had to miss the Preakness, but he came back sharp late last year with an allowance win and then a hard-fought second in the Clark (G2). That day he did the dirty work on the pace. But, if he can work out a close-up stalking trip in the Pegasus World Cup, he can have even more in the tank late and make even better account.
Although Hoist the Gold is a sprinter, and not proven at this distance, his pedigree on both top and bottom suggests that he has some upside trying it. He has the early speed to get a good position, and he is another horse who can run a winning race from just off the lead. That’s a style that plays well at Gulfstream, and his trainer Dallas Stewart is well known for pulling surprises in some of the country’s most important races.

Skippylongstocking has to handle a challenging outside post, but aside from that there are still reasons to think he can hit the board. He is well proven at 1 ⅛ miles and over the Gulfstream dirt, and he has the tactical speed to work out a trip. If he can get in an outside stalking position and try to find a place to drop in before the turn, he could have enough left to find the frame.
Although closers can be up against it on the win end, there is enough forward gas in this race that a good closer can get a piece underneath. This race has a very good closer in Senor Buscador. He can take his race with him to different tracks, and is well proven to show up in races of this class and get shares of the prize money. His usual race is good enough to do that again.
