4 Facts About The UEFA Super Cup
UCL Winners Have Won 22 of The 41 Previous Editions
The UEFA Super Cup pits the reigning UEFA Champions League champions against the winners of the UEFA Europa League, which is why Real Madrid and Manchester United, two of the world’s biggest soccer teams, will lock horns in Macedonia.
Most online bookmakers make Real Madrid the pre-match favorites to win the UEFA Super Cup and history is on the Spanish outfit’s side because 22 of the previous 41 Super Cups, including four of the last five, have been won by the Champions League winners.
Madrid To Become The Second-Most Successful Super Cup Team
Madrid are the reigning Super Cup champions having beaten Sevilla 3-3 after extra time in Trondheim, Norway in August 2016. Should Real Madrid go on and beat Manchester United in this latest final, they would become the second-most successful Super Cup team in history with four titles, one less than Barcelona and AC Milan who have each won the trophy on five occasions.
Manchester United has featured in the UEFA Super Cup three times, winning once in 1991 and losing twice in 1999 and 2008. A victory for the Red Devils in this season’s Super Cup would see them move within one win of England’s most successful Super Cup team, Liverpool.
Most UEFA Super Cup wins by club:
- 5: AC Milan, Barcelona
- 3: Liverpool, Real Madrid
- 2: Ajax, Anderlecht, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, Valencia
Thanks to winning the Europa League, United join Chelsea in the record books as being the only teams to have competed in the Super Cup having held all three of UEFA’s main titles, the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup, Champions League and Europa League.
3 Of The Last 5 Super Cups Went Over 2.5 Goals
Those of you who like to bet on the goals market, particularly the over 2.5 goals market, will be pleased to know that a handful of recent Super Cups have triggered this market and even got themselves into the record books. The 2012 Super Cup between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea ended 4-1 in Madrid’s favour, which is still the biggest winning margin in the competition. More recently, in 2015, Barcelona defeated Sevilla 5-4 to claim the title of highest-scoring final.
UEFA Super Cup Final Outcomes:
- Highest-scoring final: 2015, Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla
- Biggest winning margin: 2006, Sevilla 3-0 Barcelona, and 2012, Atlético Madrid 4-1 Chelsea
While a similar scoreline is unlikely in the Real Madrid versus Manchester United match, there is the potential for plenty of goals because Madrid look set to start with Cristiano Ronaldo up front and he will face a makeshift defense thanks to Eric Bailly and Phil Jones both being suspended.
Ronaldo has banged in 406 goals in 394 games for Madrid, including 90 goals in 88 European games. Should Ronaldo, who has two Super Cup goals to his name, find the back of the net against United, he will join a list of eight players tied on three Super Cup goals. If he bags a brace or more, he will become the all-time top scorer in the Super Cup and who would bet against him doing that?
Keeping with the goals markets, only two players have managed to score a hat trick in the Super Cup. Terry McDermott of Liverpool was the first player to achieve this feat, doing so in 1977 while Radamel Falcao scored three goals as Atletico Madrid turned Chelsea over 4-1 in 2012.
6 Super Cup Winners Decided In Extra Time
For those of you out there reading this wondering if it is worth betting on the outcome after 90-minutes of if the game will go to extra time and even penalties, it is worth noting that only six Super Cups have needed extra time to determine a winner, most recently Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Sevilla in 2016, and only one game has ever gone to a penalty shootout; that was in 2013 when Bayern Munich and Chelsea drew 2-2 before Munich won 5-4 on penalties.
