Gotham Stakes 2017

Gotham Stakes Picks & Predictions

By Jessica Paquette

Though the race has drawn a field primarily made up of East Coast contenders, one colt has made the long trip from the West Coast to try stamp his ticket to the Run for the Roses.

Doug O’Neill will send out So Conflated, a gray son of Eskendereya, in the familiar purple and white silks of Reddam Racing.

The barn’s go-to rider, Mario Gutierrez, will be in the irons. These are the same connections that teamed up to win the Kentucky Derby with I’ll Have Another in 2012 and with Nyquist in 2016.

So Conflated was purchased for a modest $70,000 as a juvenile and has won two of his three starts. He was last seen winning the California Derby at Golden Gate and will be stepping up to graded stakes competition for the first time.

El Areeb looms as a very formidable favorite at odds of 6-5. It is difficult to find fault with his strong resume.  After two average maiden efforts, he notched his first victory in his third start and has not looked back since.

He has won three consecutive stakes races including the Jerome Stakes (G3) and the Withers Stakes (G3), both at Aqueduct. By all accounts he has been training impressively since his last victory and had a recent bullet workout at Laurel Park in preparation for this race.

Always a major contender in graded stakes races on the Triple Crown trail, Todd Pletcher will be represented by longshot Action Everyday from the outside post. A dark bay son of The Factor, he cost $400,000 as a two-year-old and will be trying to earn his first black type victory.

He made his career debut in December at Tampa Bay Downs with an easy victory. He followed that up with a win against allowance company as the heavy favorite. He is proven around two turns and will try to extend his winning streak to three and put himself in the picture as a legitimate Derby contender.

Here is the field for the Gotham Stakes along with morning line odds.
