Juddmonte Spinster Stakes Preview

Lacking a standout contender in what should be a very good betting race, favored status for the Juddmonte Spinster falls to the Bill Mott-trained Lockdown, listed at 3-1 in both the morning line and Bovada's racebook. This three-year-old filly is stepping up to face older mares for the first time.

While still seeking her first graded-stakes win, she's been taking on the top runners her age and has been in the money in seven of eight lifetime starts. We liked her chances at a price a month ago in the (G1) Cotillion Stakes, and while she ran well to finish third, she has yet to show she can win at a distance beyond a mile, and this seems like a spot to try and beat her.

Locust Grove Runners Top Contenders Again

Breaking from the #11 post, Romantic Vision (5-1) got an excellent tactical ride from jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. last out to win the (G3) Locust Grove stakes at Churchill, sitting in the second flight of horses into the stretch and then taking over and showing enough finishing kick to get the job done. While she may not get the exact same trip set-up here, she has two wins over the Keeneland track to her name, and has shown she doesn't need to be on the lead early to get the job done.

Finishing right behind her in the Locust Grove was Argentina-bred Blue Prize (5-1).

A Grade 1 winner last year on her native soil, she's made four starts in the US this year and has run second in all four, including being beaten by just a nose two back behind a graded-stakes winner in Verve's Tale in the Summer Colony Stakes at Saratoga.

Also coming out of the Locust Grove is the third-place finisher Tiger Moth (6-1) for trainer Brad Cox. A late runner who should have no problem with the nine furlongs, she rallied from second-last two starts ago to take the (G3) Groupie Doll Stakes at Ellis Park.

There she was able to close into a fast early pace and tiring front runners, and with several long shots in the Juddmonte Spinster expected to go out quickly, she just may get the same trip here.

The Juddmonte Spinster goes Sunday, October 8 from Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. Scheduled post time is 5:45 PM Eastern. It's race #9 of 10 from Keeneland on the day, and immediately follows the running of the (G3) Dixiana Bourbon Stakes. Bet selected races at Keeneland or the full day's card with an account at any of our top-rated online racebooks.
