Toronto Maples Leafs: Remain highly inconsistent
Following a 4-1 home win against St. Louis to open the New Year - Toronto went on a west coast road swing that opened with a 4-0 win over the Ducks in Anaheim. The final two games in California didn’t go so well as the Maple Leafs were stymied 2-1 by the Los Angeles Kings and then racked 7-0 by the Sharks. Though largely inconsistent from game to game, Toronto has played winning hockey recently as they are 14-9-3 after opening their season with a 2-8-4 record. The Buds 16-17-7 overall record has Toronto eight points behind Boston who own the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Opening a “lead” in the NHL basement battle
Doomed since the start of the season, after they posted a 2-10-0 mark in October, Columbus tried to fight back as they posted an 8-5-0 record during November. The Blue Jackets are back in free fall though as they are 5-10-4 during their last 19 games. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky (groin) missing 16 straight contests has contributed to the crash in Columbus. The Blue Jackets 144 goals allowed is the worst mark in the NHL and they've been outscored 36-25 during an ongoing 2-7-0 slide. Following 4-1 and 4-3 (OT) losses to Carolina, Columbus was crushed 5-2 by the Islanders in Brooklyn last night.
