Woodbine Racetrack’s feature race for fillies and mares on the lawn happens Sunday, October 8: the Grade 1, $750,000 E. P. Taylor! The race covers a mile and a quarter over Woodbine’s sweeping outer turf course, coincidentally also named after Canadian racing and breeding legend E. P. Taylor. If you are serious about betting on horse races, you cannot miss this race!
The 2023 edition of the E. P. Taylor drew a field of ten horses. They include local prep winner Moira, recent Grade 1 winner Fev Rover, Charlie Appleby shipper With the Moonlight, and seven other fillies and mares trying to find their way into the spotlight. With this kind of field, no wonder the race is one of the best betting opportunities of the autumn!

E. P. Taylor Bet-Againsts
There is significant value to be had in this race: both in beating With the Moonlight in the top spot and betting against Fev Rover finding her best at all. With the Moonlight often ships out for spots like this and gets heavily bet because of Appleby’s shipping record, but she finishes second and third enough to keep her in those kinds of spots this time.
As for Fev Rover, 1 ¼ miles is on the long side for her, and she faces horses who either like that distance or are unexposed here. She is particularly vulnerable since she won’t get an easy lead, with Rocky Sky likely entered as a pacemaker for her stablemates.
E. P. Taylor Top Contenders
Moira looked as good as ever in her local prep, the Canadian (G2). She made an eye-catching run from near the rear of a short field last out, and is versatile enough to do that or sit closer-up if the likes of Fev Rover and Rocky Sky don’t set an extremely fast pace. All in all, she has the stamina, form, and local course acumen to be a strong win contender in this spot.
Skims, for trainer Shug McGaughey, is better now than she was the last time she tried 1 ¼ miles. Though she has serious tables to turn on Moira from the Canadian last out, McGaughey’s charges tend to move forward in their second start off the layoff. With some rain in the forecast, as well, she should take a liking to the turf condition.
E. P. Taylor Exotic Contenders
Kalifornia Queen is the most interesting of the Chad Brown group. Though Consumer Spending is the top-stringer (and Rocky Sky the rabbit), Kalifornia Queen is more seasoned, she is already proven to handle the Woodbine course (she was a close third in this race two years ago), and the rain during the week means she should like the softened ground.
Amazing Grace is another who could get a piece underneath. She should like the ground after some rain in the days leading up to the race, and she reliably makes a run from midpack or further back, whether the pace is slow or not. 1 ¼ miles is her shortest trip since shifting to North America, but looking back to her European form she has never missed the board at this distance category.
