Pittsburgh Penguins: In need of an offensive spark
Where is the scoring in Pittsburgh? Many are asking that question and it’s a more than justified query. The Penguins are 15 games into their 2015-16 NHL schedule and they have a scored a not so grand total of 35 goals. By comparison - the Pens had potted 57 goals at this point last season. Simply put, the Steel City stars are not shinning as Evgeni Malkin leads the Penguins with 12 points, ranking him 64th overall in the NHL, while Sidney Crosby’s nine points has him placed 143rd on the point scoring list. Compensating for their lack of offense, the Penguins have been solid on defense as their 31 goals allowed is the second lowest total in the league – just behind the 28 goals allowed by the Rangers.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Continue to struggle at both ends of the ice
Sitting dead last in the NHL, thanks to a 4-12-0 record, problems are plentiful in Columbus. The Blue Jackets are already eleven points out a playoff position in the Eastern Conference and their season may be over before we hit the Christmas break. Following a disastrous 0-8-0 season start, Columbus has improved slightly as they are 4-4-0 over their last eight contests. The Blue Jackets have scored three more goals than the Penguins but their 59 goals allowed is the second worst mark in the league. Being as they are the only team that still hasn’t recorded a victory on their home ice - Columbus may be happy to be heading out on the road tonight. The Blue Jackets have enjoyed some success versus the Penguins recently as they won the season series by a 3-1 count last year.
