The Travers Stakes is the oldest stakes race in US thoroughbred racing. It was first contested on August 2nd, 1864. Among the horses that have won the historic race was Whirlaway, the 1941 Triple Crown winner.

Other famous winners of the Travers States are Alydar, Arrogate, Buckpasser, Easy Goer, Man o’ War, Point Given, and Sword Dancer. The winner of this race also receives an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup.
