As its name implies, it is a springboard to the Kentucky Derby trail! The race has been contested since 2001, but in recent years its importance on the trail has gone up. Its most accomplished runner, however, was a second-place finisher: Will Take Charge, who ran second to 128-1 shocker Texas Bling in 2012, went on to win the Travers (G1) and take champion three-year-old honors!

Remington Springboard Mile Handicapping
Now that you know the best places to bet the race online, let’s take a look at the top contenders in the Remington Springboard Mile.
Remington Springboard Mile Favorites
Trainer Steve Asmussen, already a six-time winner of this race, has two entrants this year. The likely chalk is #5 Classic Moment. Though he steps up from a maiden win to fac winners for the first time, he comes from a classy track (Churchill Downs), he has shown tactical speed, and he has a good pedigree to stretch out to a mile.
Stewart Elliott also rides Classic Moment, which stands out since Elliott rode #1 Concept last out. Concept, the other Asmussen horse, is already a stakes winner at Remington. But, mired on the inside in a field of nine, he will probably be forced to send for speed, which may not work to his advantage. He has also never stretched out to a mile before.
The Intriguing Horses
#9 Osbourne, for trainer Ron Moquett, is the most interesting horse in the field. He has tactical speed from the outside, which should help him get a good trip. Second off the lay, he should be fit as well. Though this is Osbourne’s first route race, his pedigree should carry him at least a mile, if not longer later. And, it is good to see jockey Julien Leparoux ship out to ride.
If the runners who have speed go too fast early, closer #3 Bye Bye Bobby can be the beneficiary. His trainer, Todd Fincher, won the Springboard last year. Though Bye Bye Bobby has only raced once, he beat winners in a stakes race and is bred very well to stretch out from that sprint trip to a two-turn journey like this.
The Bet-Against
#2 Make It Big will take a lot of betting action, especially with Jose Ortiz coming out to ride. But, he has a lot to prove. Often Gulfstream horses, especially ones coming from weaker races, cannot hold their form when shipping out to other tracks and facing tougher. Make It Big is proven against Florida-breds, but facing open company at a new track, he will not provide value.
Interesting Longshots
#6 Rowdy Rascal also comes in from a state-bred race, but he won’t be bet as hard because of his lower-profile connections, and that good state-bred form comes over the Remington course. He looked as good as ever when trouncing Oklahoma-breds over the mile trip last out, and is tactical enough to work out another good trip in the Springboard.
#7 Rich Strike’s only victory came in a maiden claimer, but the allowance try at Keeneland was a positive sign. Despite early trouble in that race, he remained interested and ran on for third, a solid first attempt against winners. The mile trip is proven to suit him, and he should be coming on strongly if the speed horses get too frisky on the front end.
