San Felipe Stakes
San Felipe Stakes Picks
By Brent Sedo
The field for the San Felipe is led by the undefeated Mastery, a Bob Baffert trainee who has been made the morning line favorite at odds of 6-5. After breaking his maiden with a 4 1/4 length romp at first asking last October, he closed out 2016 with wins in both the (G3) Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar, and then claimed the (G1) Cash Call Futurity at Los Alamitos, winning by more than 7 lengths. Expect him to break quickly from the gate and be in the pace mix right from the start.
Taking him on will be Gormley (9-5), himself a two-time graded stakes winner, and a winner of three-of-four overall. He comes into this with one start on the season already, having won the (G3) Sham Stakes on the Santa Anita dirt in early January.
Ann Arbor Eddie (8-1) is looking for some degree of redemption in the San Felipe, as he was the beaten favorite last time out in the (G3) El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields last month. After winning a three-way battle into the top of the streach, he was caught in the last sixteenth. He caused interference with another horse and was eventually DQ'd from second to fourth, a result that cost him valuable Kentucky Derby qualifying points.
Ann Arbour Eddie is trained by Doug O'Neill, as is Iliad (5-2), another with a graded-stakes win to his name. He finished first in the (G3) San Vincente Stakes on the Santa Anita dirt three weeks ago. In that one he was able to get a good stalking trip just off the leaders before making his move to the front with a quarter-mile to run. The same running style would serve him well here with the top two choices expected to show lots of early speed up front.
The San Felipe Stakes goes Saturday, Matrch 11 from Santa Anita Race Track. Post time is 2:04 PM Pacific.
