Shadwell Turf Mile Picks 2017

Shadwell Turf Mile Picks 2017

Shadwell Turf Mile Preview

Since winning the 2016 Shadwell, Miss Temple City (3-1 in the morning line odds) has had mixed success, with a pair of wins in her next five starts, which included a fifth-place finish in the 2016 Breeder's Cup Mile. She started 2017 with high hopes in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot in the UK, but finished well up the track. She returned to US soil to run third in the (G3) Matchmaker Stakes, and last out took the (G3) Kentucky Downs Lady Turf Stakes.

While deserving full credit for her win last year, she seems to be in tough to repeat, with several runners coming into the race in good form and having faced some recent top competition. One of those is Ontario-bred Heart To Heart (7-2), like Miss Temple City a multiple graded-stakes winner who has been in the money in his last four starts, with a pair of wins.

Last out he took the (G2) Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga, setting quick fractions while going wire-to-wire over a solid field, opening up by as much as three lengths in the stretch before hitting the wire 1 1/4 length in front. He'll have to work a bit to get the lead breaking from the #10 post, but with not a lot of other early speed in the race, if he gets there he might be very tough to catch.

French Invader Deserves Longshot Look

An interesting longshot option for the exactas and trifectas is the French-bred Suedois (15-1) who will be making his North American debut. He was very competitive last year at the top levels in Europe, with three in-the-money finishes in Group 1 races, and comes into this off a win going a mile in a Group 2 event in Ireland. Prior to that he was third, beaten less than a length in a Group 3 race at York in England, a race where he probably wanted just a bit firmer ground and a bit more than the seven furlong distance.

Also in the field is the always game Irish-bred Mondialiste (4-1) for trainer David O'Meara, who also has Suedois. Fourth in the Shadwell last year, he was also fourth last out in the Woodbine Mile, rallying from way back into what was a very quick last 1/4 mile, and just missing the show money by a nose. That race was won by World Approval, who figures to be the favorite among North American-based horses for the BC Mile at Del Mar on November 4.

The Shadwell Turf Mile goes Saturday, October 7 from Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky with an expected post time of 5:45 PM Eastern.

It's the last of three Grade 1 stakes on the Saturday Keeneland schedule, and one of five graded-stakes races on the day. You can bet the Shadwell Turf Mile or the entire day of racing through the Today's Tracks links in an online racebook.
