Chiefs, 49ers in Unfamiliar Territory
It’s been so long since the Kansas City Chiefs played in the Super Bowl, they weren’t even an NFL team then. The Chiefs were the final champion of the AFL in 1969, the year prior to the AFL-NFL merger. They defeated the NFL champion Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl 4.
The Chiefs were 12-point underdogs in that game. They also played in the first Super Bowl game and lost 35-10 to the Green Bay Packers as 14-point underdogs. So the Chiefs are Super Bowl Odds Vegas 2020 favorites, a first for the franchise.
Being an underdog is also a new experience for San Francisco. The 49ers are in their seventh Super Bowl. They’re 5-1, the best winning percentage of any team that’s played in three or more Super Bowls. And the Niners kicked off as favorites in all six prior appearances. Their last Super Bowl win came in 1995. They won and covered 49-26 over the San Diego Chargers as a Super Bowl-record 18.5-point chalk.

Chiefs Were Preseason Super Bowl Favorites
Bovada listed Kansas City as the +700 favorites to win Super Bowl 54 in their opening line odds to win the Super Bowl 2020, released shortly following the conclusion of Super Bowl 53.
There was logic in backing the Chiefs. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the reigning NFL MVP. Tight end Travis Kelce caught five touchdown passes and went for over 1,000 yards in receptions. Receiver Tyreek Hill was at the end of seven TD passes. Rookie wideout Mecole Hardman caught just 26 passes, but six went for TDs.

The Chiefs endured a bit of a scare near midseason when Mahomes suffered a dislocated right kneecap in a game against the Denver Broncos, but he missed only two games. Mahomes returned to the lineup for a 35-32 loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs are 8-0 since that setback. KC went 12-4 and won the AFC West.
No such high expectations were placed upon the 49ers in the Super Bowl Odds 2020. When the NFLSuperBowlOdds2020 NFL season kicked off Sept. 8th, the Niners were listed by Bovada with a line of +4500 in the NFL Super Bowl Odds 2020. They were coming off a 4-12 campaign in which QB Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ended ACL tear in Week 3.
Undaunted, San Fran opened the season 8-0. The Niners weren’t as dominant during the second half of the season, going 5-3, but they did enough to win the NFC West title and gain the NFC’s top seed. They are the fifth NFC West team to play in the Super Bowl in seven years, as well as the fifth No. 1 seed to represent the NFC in the past seven Super Bowls.

Garoppolo is more of a game manager. He’s backed by a trio of running backs who all toped 600 yards in Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida. The Niners are the first NFL team to have three backs go over 600 yards in the same season since the 1978 New England Patriots.
Like Kelce, 49ers tight end George Kittle caught five TDs and bettered 1,000 yards in pass receptions.
Final Score Could Be Totally Amazing
Far too often in its history, the Super Bowl has proven to be a low-scoring dull game or a lopsided blowout. This game, though, has the potential to light up both sides of the scoreboard.
San Francisco was the NFL’s fourth-ranked offense (381.1 yards per game), while Kansas City ended up sixth overall (379.2 ypg). The Chiefs (43 points per game) and 49ers (32 ppg) are 1-2 in scoring offense during the playoffs.
The Chiefs scored 51 points on the Houston Texans in the NFL Divisional Round playoffs.

On the flip side, KC is the No. 17 defense (349.6 ypg) and 26th at stopping the run (128.2 ypg), which should play into the hands of San Francisco’s power running game.
The Niners are the No. 4 defense (281.1 ypg), but they’ve struggled this season in games against mobile QBs like Mahomes.
The total is set at 54 points in the Super Bowl Odds Vegas 2020. The overlooks to be a solid play here.
