If you are looking for the best opportunity to bet on horses this weekend, look no further than the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes on Sunday, October 1 at Woodbine! The 1 ½-mile dirt race is the third and final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown. And, with a field of horses who are all trying such a long distance for the first time, it is always a great race for finding betting value.
The race should not have a heavy favorite, as two different horses split the first two legs of the series: Paramount Prince won the King’s Plate, while Velocitor took the Prince of Wales’ later in the summer. It takes both strong form and stout pedigree to get all the way in the Breeders’, and often the horse with the right combination of both is one the bettors don’t all see.

Breeders' Stakes Handicapping
Before you place your bet on the race, let’s delve a little deeper and get to know the main contenders for the 2023 Breeders' Stakes.
Breeders' Stakes Top Play
Tito’s Calling beat fillies in the 1 ¼-mile Wonder Where last out, and she has the tools to beat the boys in this race as well. She was able to track a slow pace and finish well enough to draw off by four lengths in the end. With a slow pace likely in the Breeders’, that same kind of trip should work wonders for her, and she should be a bit of a price as a new face to the Triple Crown series.
Breeders' Stakes Contenders
Paramount Prince wired the King’s Plate two starts ago and he has a good chance to get that same kind of pace setup this time as well. In fact, there was more pace on paper in that race than this one. The biggest question for him is turf, as he has yet to try that footing. But, often horses who handle Tapeta well also do well on the grass. If that carries for him and he can stay the extra quarter-mile, he could prove hard to catch down the lane.
Wickenheiser chased Tito’s Calling home in the Wonder Where, closing for second. She probably runs into a similar problem this time as she did in that earlier race: having to close into a slow pace. However, if she starts better she may be able to sit a bit closer or at least finish with even more vigor. And, if the final quarter-mile tires out the horses in front, her stout pedigree has a better chance than most of seeing out the 12 furlongs.
Breeders' Stakes Exotics Horses
He has to move forward, but perhaps no horse in this field has a better pedigree for this long distance than British Artillery. Furthermore, he has more early speed than most of his foes. The near-inside gate is a question, but assuming he breaks well, British Artillery should be able to get a close-up spot behind the slow pace. If he likes 1 ½ miles as much as his pedigree suggests he may, that could mean big money for his supporters.
Even though Elysian Field could not get to Paramount Prince in the lane during the King’s Plate, she still ran credibly. She wasn’t losing ground on the winner – he just had a better pace setup, being able to set a slow pace and get the jump. That may unfold the same way in the Breeders’, but the odds are good that Elysian Field can make a run and chase on well for another share in the exotics.
