Historically, the fighter beats the puncher in this type of clash. Adesanya simply has more tools in his arsenal, more ways that he can beat Costa. That’s why he’s the play in the UFC 253 Vegas odds.
-
World middleweight champion Israel Adesanya (-165) is favored to defeat Paulo Costa (+135) and defend his title in the main event at UFC 253 on Sept. 26
-
Both Adesanya (19-0) and Costa (13-0) enter the octagon with unbeaten records
-
Dominick Reyes (-260) is the chalk to capture the UFC light-heavyweight title in a bout against Jan Blachowicz (+200)
It’s not often that bettors get the chance to wager on a bout featuring two unbeaten fighters. The occurrence is an even rarer occasion when such a scrap is carded in a world title fight. But that’s exactly what UFC 253 is serving up in its main event.
Neither champion Israel Adesanya (19-0) or challenger Paulo Costa (13-0) know what it feels like to finish second-best, to taste defeat. But one of them will be required to swallow this bitter pill when they clash on Sept. 26.
Adesanya is 8-0 since joining the UFC. Costa is 5-0 since he signed with the promotion.

Bad Blood Abounds
This bout was originally slated for UFC 248. However, an injury to Costa forced him to pull out of the fight. Yoel Romero took his place on short notice and was decisioned by Adesanya.

Since then, Adesanya and Costa have waged a war of words leading up to their next scheduled meeting and this isn’t a case of trying to hype the bout. These two really can’t stand each other.
Costa has mocked Adesanya’s lean physique. Adesanya countered by dropping subtle suggestions that his opponent dabbles in steroids.
Adesanya-Costa A Contrast In Styles
This bout is one of the most talked-about and anticipated events of the year in UFC. The build-up in the UFC odds was only enhanced by the cancellation of the first bout. This has only served to create even more buzz about this showdown of unbeatens.
Never at a loss for words, some MMA fans might be put off by Adesanya’s cockiness. Known as The Last Stylebender, in the lead-up to this fight, he’s looked beyond Costa to discuss potential future bouts with Jared Cannonier, Darren Till, and Jack Hermansson.
There can be no questioning of Adesanya’s credentials. Along with his victory over Romero in UFC 248, he’s taken out some of the finest middleweights in the world, including former champion Robert Whittaker, Kelvin Gastelum, Anderson Silva, and Derek Brunson.
Style vs Punishment
Adesanya is known for his elusiveness in the octagon and the pinpoint accuracy of his strikes. Costa, on the other hand, is a pure punisher, earning the nickname The Eraser. He’s won four of his five UFC bouts via knockout.
Costa is a wrecking ball. He drives straight ahead and seeks to aggressively attack his opponent. This bout is all about sleek style against raw brutality.
Light-Heavyweight Title Up For Grabs
An apparent dispute over contract money, combined with a desire to step up to the heavyweight ranks, caused Jon Jones to vacate his status as UFC light-heavyweight champion.
Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz will do battle for the belt.
Reyes is a sizeable favorite in the UFC 253 odds for a number of reasons. First of all, he’s lost just once in 13 MMA fights. Veteran Blachowicz has tasted defeated eight times in 34 bouts. On top of that, Reyes is the more well-rounded fighter of the two. He can beat an opponent via a variety of methods. He’s equally adept at striking with his punching power, or slowing an opposition fighter through a barrage of punishing kicks.

Blachowciz has a background in wrestling, so he shows his best work when the fight goes to the mat. He’s won a number of bouts via submission holds. The problem he faces is that Reyes has proven a difficult opponent to take out of his vertical gameplan.
