UFC Preview: UFC Fight Night 78 Gastelum Vs. Magny

UFC Preview: UFC Fight Night 78 Gastelum Vs. Magny

Main Event: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Neil Magny

Odds: Gastelum -270, Magny +230

Welterweights spar off in the headlining event at UFC Fight Night 78. Veteran Neil Magny enters the match having only lost once in his previous 9 matches, but is considered to be the underdog. Gastelum may have a height disadvantage – in this match specifically - but at 12-1 in his MMA career Gastelum’s impressive record helps make up for the disadvantage. Magny does have other advantages, not just height. These advantages include slightly better striking skills and takedown skills. Gastelum does have a mild edge in the submission game, but neither fighter is overly reliant on submission meaning Magny has a good shot at pulling off an upset on Saturday night.

Pick: Magny

Diego Sanchez vs. Ricardo Lamas

Odds: Sanchez +400, Lamas -650

Highly ranked featherweight Ricardo Lamas – sitting at 4th on the rankings – faces veteran Diego Sanchez in what should be one of the most exciting matches on the card. Lamas could get into the conservation for a featherweight title fight if he can win on Saturday. He did lose his last fight, but that was over seven months ago meaning Lamas is fresh and well-prepared. Sanchez has been out of the Octagon since June of 2014 and has only one victory in the last two and a half years.

Pick: Lamas

Efrain Escudero vs. Leandro Silva

Odds: Escudero +108, Silva -139

With the event being held in Monterrey Mexico, Escudero gets that home crow bump commonly given to fighters fighting in their native countries. Escudero does have other advantages though, including more MMA wins than Silva has total fights. The fight should be a close one, but Escurdero will need to draw from the home crowd to defeat Silva – who has two wins and a no contest in his last three fights.

Pick: Escudero
