The NFL preseason is upon us and while yes it's true, the games don't count in the standings, they do impact upon a team's final roster. Certainly, that's important info for future wagering, and it's also vital in the short term. A club with many lineup decisions to make is likely to take a much different approach to the preseason than a team with relatively few choices to consider.

Thanks to a ruling by the United States Supreme Court, it would appear that sports betting is now open to any of the country's 50 states. America's highest court reversed a law that prohibited legalized sports betting in any state other than Nevada. But despite urging from the NFL, MBA, MLB and NBA to uphold the law, the court opted to change the betting landscape in America forever.

Before you go racing off to the sportsbook to place your bets on the Philadelphia Eagles winning Super Bowl LIII, repeat after me: Super Bowl champions no longer repeat the process. It's happened once since 2000, when the New England Patriots captured Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX. But faced with the opportunity to do so against the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, the defending champion Patriots dropped the ball.

A win in Super Bowl LII, and the New England Patriots will join the Pittsburgh Steelers with a share of the record for most Super Bowls won. Each franchise would have six victories. A win in Super Bowl LII and the Philadelphia Eagles would remove themselves from the list of teams that are winless in multiple Super Bowl appearances, a group that also includes Buffalo, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Carolina.

Beyond the straight up determination and point spread wagering on who will win Super Bowl LII between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, there's also over/under or total wagering available, clearly the toughest of the three wagers to call. Straight up, favorites are 35-16 in Super Bowls, and 28-19-2 against the spread. But the over/under is almost a perfect split, going 26-24-1.

Sports history hasn't been kind to Philadelphia, but then again, Philadelphia sports fans aren't known for their kindness, either. Don't forget, this is the town that booed Santa Claus. It's the place where the wife of Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Norm Barnes was booed during a charity fashion show. And Donovan McNabb, the previous quarterback to lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl, was booed on draft day.
